The estimation was based on the concentrations of the compounds in the food mixtures of seven categories consisting of 246 foods by the market basket method. The daily intake of most food additives increased with age. The daily intake of xylitol, however, was approximately ten times higher in small children and children than in the aged. It was clearly shown that the daily intake of food additives differed among the age groups, and that the differences are attributable to different food consumption patterns. None of the food additives exceeded the ADI, except nitrate, whose intake was 1.1-2.2 times higher than the ADI.
