Rather than relying solely on pharmacotherapy to improve risk factors and vascular outcomes, physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and medical providers should emphasize the benefits of a well-balanced, nutritionally sound dietary program. The diet should be low in saturated fatty acids, controlled in calories to avoid (or reduce) obesity, and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, and good sources of protein.
