Cost of diet was measured in \u20ac\/week based on common Greek dietary choices, while baseline dietary habits were assessed through a semi-quantitative FFQ (Greek-<span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_80438 classtoolTips80438'>EPIC<\/span>). The Mediterranean Diet Score (MedDietScore) was applied to assess overall adherence to this pattern using scores of eleven food variables and alcohol, according to the principles of the Mediterranean diet.<\/p>\n<p>SETTING: Five-year follow-up of the ATTICA study, a nutrition and health survey of a representative, free-living sample of the Greek population resident in the province of Attica, where Athens is a major metropolis.<\/p>\n<p>SUBJECTS: From 2001 to 2002, 1514 men and 1528 women (aged &gt;18 years) without known CVD were enrolled. In 2006, the 5-year follow-up was performed.<\/p>\n<p>RESULTS: The weekly cost of participants&rsquo; diets varied from 5\u00b735 to 83\u00b757 \u20ac\/week in men (mean 25\u00b745 (sd 6\u00b780) \u20ac\/week) and from 10\u00b789 to 55\u00b749 \u20ac\/week in women (mean 25\u00b763 (sd 6\u00b730) \u20ac\/week). Diet cost was correlated marginally to MedDietScore (r = 0\u00b7060, P = 0\u00b705) as well as being associated with history of hypercholesterolaemia (mean (sd), yes v. no: 24\u00b790 (5\u00b773) v. 25\u00b782 (6\u00b795) \u20ac\/week, P = 0\u00b7027), physical activity (mean (sd), yes v. no: 26\u00b742 (6\u00b790) v. 24\u00b782 (6\u00b720) \u20ac\/week, P &lt; 0\u00b7001) and current smoking (mean (sd), yes v. no: 24\u00b799 (6\u00b740) v. 25\u00b798 (6\u00b770) \u20ac\/week, P = 0\u00b7017). No significant association was found between diet cost and 5-year incidence of CVD (hazard ratio = 1\u00b7021, 95 % CI 0\u00b7965, 1\u00b7081). However, adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet was inversely associated with the development of CVD (relative risk per 1-unit increase in MedDietScore = 0\u00b792, 95 % CI 0\u00b789, 0\u00b794) after adjustment for various potential confounders including diet cost.<\/p>\n<p>CONCLUSIONS: Quality but not cost of the diet is associated with the development of CVD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","mots_cles":[],"class_list":["post-39910","resume","type-resume","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"adresse":"Department of Nutrition Science -
