Although they are two distinct fruits, both names are actually used for the pomelo, the only one of the two that is eaten in France.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pomelo is thought to be derived from a cross between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citrus maxima <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(grapefruit tree) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citrus sinensis <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(orange tree) (Cirad, 2018).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>PHYSICAL AND ORGANOLEPTIC CHARACTERISTICS<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>flesh of the pomelo can be white, pink or red<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the color influenced by the carotenoid composition (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zhen, 2016<\/a>):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>red color of pink grapefruit is due to the presence of lycopene <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21594623\/\">Costa, 2012 <\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zhen, 2016<\/a>);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Pomelos with white flesh contain more \u03b2-carotene <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zheng, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 170 aromatic compounds were found in pomelo pulp. Among them, 20 monoterpenes (43-70%), 48 sesquiterpenes (11-45%), 21 terpene alcohols and aldehydes, 18 aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes, 9 ketones, 21 esters, 21 alkanes and 12 other categories. According to this analysis, the most quantitatively represented compounds are D-limonene (30.07-67.55%), caryophyllene (9.90-25.69%), b-pinene (2.29-48.09%) and a-humulene (0-3.73%) (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zheng, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The aroma of pomelo is believed to result from a mixture of caryophyllene <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a sesquiterpene), <\/span><b>citral <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(isomer), <\/span><b>nootkatonne <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(sesquiterpene ketone) <\/span><b>and various aldehydes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as octanal, nonanal and decanal (Gous, 2019). The most important aromatic compound in pomelo is thought to be nooktkatone (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16272746\/\">Furusawa, 2005<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pomelo is a sweet fruit, but its sugar content is not expected due to its bitterness and acidity (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29800164\/\">JAMA, 2018<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The bitterness is mainly due to the presence of naringin and limonin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30813331\/#:~:text=Pungent%20and%20grapefruit%20aroma%20were,liking)%20of%20the%20tested%20beverages.\">Gous AGS, 2019<\/a>) <\/span><b>and the acidity comes from the organic acids <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it contains (30-45 mg\/g FW) (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zheng, 2016<\/a> ;\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29800164\/\">JAMA, 2018<\/a>). Citric acid accounts for 40-60% of the total organic acids and quinic acid is the second most important organic acid (15-30% of total organic acids) (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27006221\/\">Zheng, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>COMPOSITION CHARACTERISTICS (excluding macronutrients, vitamins and minerals)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pomelo contains polyphenols including narirutin, naringin and poncirin (Chaudhary, 2012). Naringin is said to have many properties such as antioxidant, lipid-lowering and anti-cancer (Mallick, 2016). It is also said to improve ketoacidosis, which is the production of highly acidic compounds in the blood (one of the consequences of diabetes) (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27073901\/\">Murunga, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the phytochemicals it contains (such as polyphenols, including flavonoids, and carotenoids), <\/span><b>pomelo has antioxidant <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30728563\/\">Kumar, 2019<\/a>) <\/span><b>and anti-inflammatory activity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and thus is thought to have a beneficial effect on intestinal inflammation (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27166529\/\">Khan, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storage of pomelos at low temperature (5 or 11 \u00b0C) is not thought to significantly affect their \u03b2-carotene and polyphenol composition (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28572940\/\">Chaudhary PR, 2016<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phyto-nutrients in pomelo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as limonene, <\/span><b>are believed to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride synthesis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and thus have <\/span><b>beneficial effects against hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular risks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27134462\/\">Mallick, 2016<\/a> ; <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32236178\/\">Lin, 2020<\/a>).
