These measures can target food <strong>demand<\/strong> by <strong>providing information to consumers <\/strong>through <strong>food labelling <\/strong>but can also target supply by <strong>improving the nutritional quality of food products through reformulation<\/strong>. <strong>Reformulation policies <\/strong>are currently the <strong>most widespread with three-quarters of countries adopting the<\/strong>m. Similarly, <strong>policies focusing on food labeling <\/strong>(e.g., the Nutri-score introduced in France in 2017), dietary guidelines and media campaigns are implemented in more than half of 154 countries. However, policies aiming <strong>to control portion sizes and to ban trans-fatty acids<\/strong> are rarely introduced. Since the twentieth century, the prevalence of <strong>noncommunicable diseases have increased at a worrying rate<\/strong>, while communicable diseases have tended to decrease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairn.info\/parlons-sante-en-30-questions--9782111578401-page-32.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Polton, 2023<\/a>). <strong>Acting on the food environment <\/strong>represents both significant challenges and opportunities for <strong>directing public health<\/strong> towards <strong>preventing <\/strong>these chronic diseases and <strong>promoting health <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shs-conferences.org\/articles\/shsconf\/pdf\/2024\/03\/shsconf_icpahd2024_02008.pdf\">Chen et li, 2024<\/a>).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>To achieve this, <strong>collective and simultaneous action by all stakeholders<\/strong> is required (Esnouf et al., 2011) and <strong>public policies<\/strong> are <strong>one of the levers<\/strong> for achieving this. This month issue of the Global Fruit and Vegetables Newsletter approaches these <strong>policies from a \u201cconsumer\u201d perspective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The first article (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10603-024-09563-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gokani, 2024<\/a>) explores<strong> how European Union legislation is evolving to better inform and empower consumers in their food choices<\/strong>. The authors analysed the various policies and regulations aimed at improving nutritional transparency and promoting healthier food choices. <strong>Key measures include mandatory nutrition labelling, restrictions on the advertising of unhealthy foods, and initiatives to make healthy options more visible and accessible<\/strong>. The emphasis is on providing clear and understandable information to help consumers make informed decisions about their diet.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The second article (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/journal-of-nutritional-science\/article\/communitybased-fruit-and-vegetable-prescription-programs-a-scoping-review\/9DBFB8B9C07E6FEB00F0A95AA3F95C21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greatorex Brooks &amp; McInerney, 2023<\/a>) is a <strong>review examining community-based fruit and vegetable prescription programs<\/strong>, aimed to increase consumption of these products among vulnerable populations. The programs analysed <strong>\u201cprescriptions\u201d or vouchers<\/strong> for fresh fruit and vegetables, often in collaboration with health care providers and local markets. The results show that <strong>these initiatives can significantly improve access to healthy foods and have positive effects on participants' health<\/strong>. However, the review also highlights challenges such as sustainable funding and effective integration into existing health systems.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The third article (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/behavioural-public-policy\/article\/nudge-plus-incorporating-reflection-into-behavioral-public-policy\/8604B908E761D223C3DF4E34AA471BC7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banerjee et al., 2024<\/a>) <strong>introduce the concept of \u201cNudge Plus\u201d, an advance on simple nudging<\/strong>. This model <strong>incorporates elements of reflection, increasing transparency and autonomy for individuals in the face of nudges<\/strong>. Unlike traditional nudges, which subtly modify the architecture of choices, Nudge Plus includes feedback mechanisms and incentives for personal reflection. For example, this could include personal commitments or reminders that encourage individuals to reflect on their food decisions and their long-term impacts on health.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>These articles converge towards a vision in which information, transparency and the active involvement of consumers are essential<\/strong> to promote healthy food choices. Legislation and community programs, when combined with strategies such as Nudge Plus, can create an environment conducive to sustainable behavioural change that benefits public health.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Finally, our infographic summarises the<strong> most frequently implemented policies in OECD countries to promote healthy food choices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:acf\/pictureable {\"name\":\"acf\/pictureable\",\"align\":\"center\",\"mode\":\"auto\"} \/-->\n\n<!-- wp:acf\/pictureable {\"name\":\"acf\/pictureable\",\"data\":{\"authors_0_fully_name\":\"Jean-Michel Lecerf \",\"_authors_0_fully_name\":\"field_pictureable_author_fully_name\",\"authors_0_profession\":\"Endocrinologist, specialist in metabolic and nutritional diseases \",\"_authors_0_profession\":\"field_pictureable_author_profession\",\"authors_0_information\":\"Jean Michel Lecerf is a physician, and his practice has been dedicated to nutrition since the beginning of his career, carried out in Lille both in hospitals and at the Institut Pasteur de Lille where he founded in 1982 a nutrition department renowned for its clinical research activities and for its communication actions.
