Their consumption is therefore highly recommended as part of a healthy diet to reduce the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of their high <strong>dietary fiber content,<\/strong> fruit and vegetables <strong>delay the absorption of carbohydrates<\/strong> after a meal, thus <strong>reducing the insulin response.<\/strong> This translates into <strong>lower postprandial blood sugar<\/strong> and <strong>insulin levels<\/strong>. Dietary fibre also <strong>increases satiety<\/strong>, thus limiting the consumption of energy-dense foods, <strong>reducing weight gain,<\/strong> a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12612226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ball et al., 2003)<\/a>. Fruit and vegetables also contain <strong>significant amounts of polyphenols and antioxidant compounds<\/strong> (carotenoids, vitamin C, etc.) <strong>that reduce oxidative<\/strong> stress which is harmful to glucose uptake <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26816602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Wang et al., 2016<\/a>). Finally, the <strong>magnesium <\/strong>found in certain fruits and vegetables plays a role in <strong>insulin action<\/strong>. Indeed, people with type 2 diabetes often suffer from hypomagnesemia, which can impair insulin secretion and promote insulin resistance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6470576\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Kostov, 2019)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1458\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/APRIFEL-protection-diabete-GB-image-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98064\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-98063","article_revue","type-article_revue","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"auteur":"","source":"","revue":[{"ID":98010,"post_author":"25","post_date":"2024-05-29 15:18:26","post_date_gmt":"2024-05-29 13:18:26","post_content":"<!-- wp:image {\"id\":98031,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Edito-ok.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98031\"\/><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Diabetes <\/strong>is a severe global public health challenge. In 2021, <strong>537 million people suffered from diabetes<\/strong>; this number is estimated to <strong>783 million<\/strong> in 2045 (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34879977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sun et al., 2022<\/a>). <strong>More than 95% of diabetes cases<\/strong> are <strong>type 2 diabetes<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO, 2023<\/a>). Diabetes exposes patients to serious complications such as the risk of amputation, myocardial infarction or stroke, and dialysis for end-stage renal failure. Diabetes is also the leading cause of blindness in adults. It can have a dramatic impact on quality of life, particularly in cases of severe neuropathy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO, 2023<\/a>).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Many factors<\/strong> influence the development of type 2 diabetes, the <strong>most important of which are lifestyle behaviours<\/strong>: poor-quality diet, low levels of physical activity, overweight, obesity and smoking (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/diabetes\/overview\/risk-factors-type-2-diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIDDK, 2016<\/a>).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In this context, the Global Fruit and Vegetables Newsletter of this month focuses on the <strong>role of lifestyle-related factors that could prevent diabetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The first article (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37743825\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hong et al., 2024<\/a>) is a <strong>data analysis study<\/strong> from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to determine how the <strong>burden of diabetes<\/strong> attributable to<strong> dietary factors<\/strong> changed from 1990 to 2019 across <strong>21 geographic areas<\/strong>. This work showed that <strong>mortality rate<\/strong> from <strong>diabetes <\/strong>is <strong>decreasing <\/strong>thanks to improvements in public health, advances in the treatment of medical conditions, and early screening and treatment of diabetes; however, the <strong>rate of disability-adjusted life years is rising<\/strong>, with differences according to age and sex. <strong>Low fruit consumption <\/strong>was found to be <strong>one of the three main dietary risk factors<\/strong> contributing to the burden of diabetes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The second article (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37973902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sampathkumar et al., 2023<\/a>) focuses on <strong>gestational diabetes<\/strong>. This systematic review aimed to summarize the available evidence from scientific studies for the <strong>various components of pre-pregnancy lifestyle <\/strong>in <strong>reducing the risk of gestational diabetes<\/strong>. Findings showed that <strong>being physically active<\/strong> and <strong>eating healthily<\/strong> <strong>before pregnancy<\/strong> <strong>reduces <\/strong>the <strong>risk <\/strong>of gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The third article (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37610191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esser et al. 2023<\/a>) shares the <strong>updates of nutritional recommendations<\/strong> in the<strong> treatment of type 2 diabetes<\/strong>. Globally, <strong>key recommendations <\/strong>for people with diabetes are <strong>largely similar<\/strong> to those for the <strong>general population<\/strong>.
