Several types of polyphenols have been identified in recent years each possessing <strong>a unique chemical structure<\/strong> and <strong>specific biological properties<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Flavonoids:<\/strong> an important class of polyphenols, including different subtypes such as (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5465813\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Panche et al., 2016<\/a>) :<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;> <strong>Flavones <\/strong>: the most well-studied is luteolin found mainly in celeri and brocoli ;<br>&#8211;><strong> Flavonols<\/strong>: the most well-studied are quercetin and kaempherol found mainly in onions, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, apples, grapes and berries ;<br>&#8211;> <strong>Flavanones<\/strong> such as naringenin found in grapes ;<br>&#8211;> <strong>Anthocyanins<\/strong> \u2013 cyanindin and delphinidin being the most well-studies &#8211; found mainly in the external part of various fruits (e.g. cranberry, blackcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stilbenoids<\/strong>: another important class, of which resveratrol is the most studied subclass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phenolic acids<\/strong>: including caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid, and tannins, found in tea and wine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ellagitannins:<\/strong> found in berries and nuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ongoing research on these substances confirms their promising health benefits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10609915\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Di Salvo et al., 2023<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2278\" src=\"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/APRIFEL-polypheno-visuel-seul-V4-02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97809\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block__reference\">\n    <div class=\"block__reference__leading\" id=\"block__reference__leading\">\n        <i class=\"fa-classic fa-solid fa-share-from-square\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\n        <strong>References<\/strong>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"block__reference__entries\" id=\"block__reference__entries\" style=\"display: none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block__reference__entry\">\n                <i class=\"fa-classic fa-solid fa-share\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\n                <span>Kumar S, Pandey AK. These substances have been of <strong>great interest<\/strong> over these last years based on the <strong>growing scientific evidence<\/strong> of their <strong>contribution <\/strong>to the <strong>benefit <\/strong>of their food sources consumption for <strong>human health<\/strong>. By different mechanisms related to their absorption and metabolism, polyphenols can <strong>increase<\/strong> the <strong>antioxidant defense systems<\/strong> of the body, <strong>regulate some key cellular processes<\/strong>, such as those involved in inflammation, cell proliferation or atherosclerosis development, and can <strong>improve several metabolic pathways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Since <strong>fruit and vegetables<\/strong> are known to be <strong>great sources<\/strong> of <strong>polyphenols<\/strong>, this month, the Global Fruit and Vegetables Newsletter focuses on the<strong> role <\/strong>of these compounds and their <strong>health benefits<\/strong>. The issue will highlight three articles that discuss the <strong>role <\/strong>of specific phenolic compounds in <strong>preventing<\/strong> certain <strong>diseases <\/strong>such as <strong>cognitive decline<\/strong>, <strong>type 2 diabetes<\/strong> and <strong>cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The first article (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35333451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cheng et al., 2022<\/a><\/strong>) is a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluating the <strong>effects <\/strong>of <strong>dietary flavonoids <\/strong>on <strong>cognition <\/strong>across the lifespan. According to this work, dietary flavonoids induced <strong>significant benefit<\/strong> to <strong>cognitive performance<\/strong> with the <strong>most notable improvements <\/strong>found for <strong>cocoa, ginkgo and berries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The second article (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38418540\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woo et al., 2024<\/a><\/strong>) is a 6 years follow up which examined the <strong>associations <\/strong>between <strong>dietary intake of flavonoids<\/strong> and their <strong>food sources<\/strong> and the <strong>risk of type 2 diabetes<\/strong> in 16,666 Korean men and women. Results show that women with a <strong>higher intake of total flavonoids, flavonols, isoflavones and proanthocyanidins<\/strong> had a<strong> lower risk of type 2 diabetes<\/strong>, while in men, <strong>flavanones, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins<\/strong>, but not total flavonoids, were <strong>inversely associated <\/strong>with the <strong>risk of type 2 diabetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The third article (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10608661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delgado-Gonzalez et al., 2023<\/a><\/strong>) is a review that examines the <strong>antioxidant properties<\/strong> and <strong>chemopreventive role <\/strong>of <strong>polyphenols <\/strong>and <strong>carotenoids <\/strong>found in vegetables, fruit and seeds. These compounds have been found to <strong>reduce reactive oxygen species<\/strong> and <strong>inflammation <\/strong>in the intestine, which are two of the leading causes of cancer.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>All these three articles <strong>confirm <\/strong>the <strong>interest <\/strong>of <strong>dietary polyphenols <\/strong>for<strong> human health<\/strong>, especially <strong>to prevent non communicable diseases<\/strong> and <strong>age-related dysfunctions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:acf\/pictureable {\"name\":\"acf\/pictureable\",\"data\":{\"authors_0_fully_name\":\"Christine Morand\",\"_authors_0_fully_name\":\"field_pictureable_author_fully_name\",\"authors_0_profession\":\"Research director\",\"_authors_0_profession\":\"field_pictureable_author_profession\",\"authors_0_information\":\"INRAe Clermont-Ferrand\",\"_authors_0_information\":\"field_pictureable_author_information\",\"authors_0_picture\":97758,\"_authors_0_picture\":\"field_pictureable_author_picture\",\"authors\":1,\"_authors\":\"field_pictureable_authors\"},\"align\":\"center\",\"mode\":\"auto\"} \/-->\n\n<!-- wp:acf\/about {\"name\":\"acf\/about\",\"data\":{\"title\":\"About the author\",\"_title\":\"field_about_title\",\"content\":\"Christine Morand is a research director at INRAe (Institut national de recherche pour l'agriculture, l'alimentation et l'environnement) and works at the Human Nutrition Unit in Clermont-Ferrand, where she heads the research team focusing on \\u0022Food, plant bioactives and vascular health\\u0022.
