Planetary health therefore brings together both issues (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dangour, 2017<\/a>). Within this framework, it has long been understood that nutrition and biodiversity (see definition below) are connected (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Johns, 2006<\/a>). Indeed, fruit and vegetables are key components of diets providing essential nutrients, phytonutrients, and fibre for health (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_79592 classtoolTips79592'>FAO<\/span>, 2021<\/a>). They are also important parts of agrobiodiversity (see definition below) with more than 1,000 vegetable species being recognized worldwide (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meldrum, 2018<\/a>). Over millennia, the biodiversity of fruit and vegetables have been shaped by human activities according to our dietary preferences, which have co-evolved with the availability of different fruits and vegetables in different agroecological settings. The use and preservation of this biocultural heritage in contemporary food systems depends on a wide range of social, cultural, political, environmental, and economic factors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This evidence-based literature review (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harris, 2022<\/a>) presents how the biodiversity of fruit and vegetables supports dietary diversity for current human populations, and how it can be preserved and enhanced for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-food-availability-accessibility-affordability-and-desirability-are-the-food-system-links-between-agrobiodiversity-and-dietary-diversity\">Food availability, accessibility, affordability, and desirability are the food system links between agrobiodiversity and dietary diversity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_custom_d1d51a030e36772b9cbd58f7639f01a5 classtoolTipsCustomShortCodeOnlyForMultiTooltips'>Dietary diversity<\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(\"document\").ready(function(){ toolTips('.tooltip_post_id_custom_d1d51a030e36772b9cbd58f7639f01a5',\"the variety of foods consumed in a certain time period\",'0'); });<\/script> is associated with human health with higher individual dietary diversity being associated with better nutrient adequacy. In particular, consuming a diversity of fruits and vegetables\u2014with the nutrients, phytonutrients and dietary fibres contained therein\u2014is essential for health (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_79592 classtoolTips79592'>FAO<\/span>, 2020<\/a>). Yet, fruit and vegetables intake remains globally low for a majority of the population (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afshin, 2019<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kalmpourtzidou, 2020<\/a>). This low consumption is mainly due to their lack of availability, accessibility and affordability in certain countries or regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even if fruit and vegetables are available, accessible and affordable, most people still do not consume sufficient amounts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hall, 2009<\/a>), particularly if they are not considered an acceptable or desirable food choice, for instance due to food safety concerns, taste, convenience, or cultural appropriateness, or if they have low knowledge or awareness about their health benefits (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aggarwal, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ha, 2020<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hammelman, 2014<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, food availability, accessibility, affordability, and desirability are the food system links between agrobiodiversity and dietary diversity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toledo, 2006<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turner, 2018<\/a>) with more species-diverse food associated with better micronutrient-quality diets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lachat, 2018<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mainstreaming-the-use-of-genetic-diversity-and-supporting-local-farmers-could-help-to-preserve-fruit-and-vegetable-biodiversity-for-current-and-future-generation\">Mainstreaming the use of genetic diversity and supporting local farmers could help to preserve fruit and vegetable biodiversity for current and future generation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The current biodiversity of fruit and vegetables continues to decline in farmers&#8217; fields, at the landscape level and in ecosystems more generally, alongside the rapid decline in overall biodiversity worldwide (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1126\/science.aax3100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D\u00edaz, 2019<\/a>). More than 85% of the world&#8217;s terrestrial ecoregions have ecosystems that are poorly conserved, degraded or disappearing due to human actions (<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/67\/6\/534\/3102935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dinerstein, 2017<\/a>). The richness and abundance of wild fruit and vegetable species, as well as cultivated wild relatives of fruit and vegetable species and pollinators and seed dispersers, are declining with the degradation and loss of these ecosystems due to land-use change, global climate change and other threats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1126\/science.aax3100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(D\u00edaz, 2019<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-020-0040-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pilling, 2020<\/a>). Consequently, these fruit and vegetable genetic resources are likely to disappear with changes in land use, climate and agriculture if there are no better conservation options at the farm, landscape, and protected area levels, and without support for genebanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though conservation of fruit and vegetables biodiversity is sub-optimal worldwide, several important trends are increasing its conservation and use in food systems at global and local levels. In addition to the fact that the proportion of fruit and vegetables in global food production is increasing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gould, 2017<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Khoury, 2014<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martin, 2019<\/a>), here are some trends that could bend the curve of decline in fruit and vegetables biodiversity even though they may not completely stop, let alone reverse, the loss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advanced technologies are now accessible to public and private breeders and researchers globally to mainstream the use of genetic diversity for developing new varieties of fruits and vegetables (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jamnadass, 2020<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schouten, 2019<\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local fruit and vegetable species and varieties are still maintained and shared by farmers and communities in different production systems. These plants provide nutritional and food security, income-generating opportunities, and ecosystem services, and contribute to cultural identity, and also represent a valuable conservation of biodiversity for food. Governments and societal actors can further support these farmers and communities to establish or maintain seed networks, and encourage equitable business linkages to markets for more resilient livelihoods based in maintaining biodiversity, through incentives and regulation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dulloo, 2017<\/a> ; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sthapit, 2016<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-one-health-integrated-approach-to-address-agrobiodiversity-and-dietary-diversity-together-while-considering-synergies-and-tradeoffs\">A One Health integrated approach to address agrobiodiversity and dietary diversity together while considering synergies and tradeoffs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Linking agrobiodiversity and dietary diversity have synergies and tradeoffs. The main synergy is the following: promoting diverse food consumption can encourage conservation of agrobiodiversity; at the same time, promoting agrobiodiversity is a practical approach for dietary diversity, food security, and rural development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toledo, 2006<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also potential trade-offs between conserving agrobiodiversity and promoting diverse diets for everyone everywhere, which include the high requirements for producing sufficient fruit and vegetables in terms of land, water, and chemical inputs depending on context and production method (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aleksandrowicz et al., 2016<\/a>). In addition, there are trade-offs among conservation of biodiversity as an end in itself versus leveraging fruit and vegetable agrobiodiversity to provide food options and improve diets, given scarce resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many factors involved in understanding the links between agrobiodiversity and dietary diversity \u2013 from plant genetic resources and ethnobotany to nutritional screening and breeding, to socio-cultural behaviours and political economy \u2013 interdisciplinary research is clearly needed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hunter, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211912422000098#bib96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9ndez, 2015).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Based on:<\/strong> Harris et al. Global Food Security, 2022;33:100618<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block__about\">\n    <strong class=\"block__about__title\">Definitions : Biodiversity and Agrobiodiversity (<span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_79592 classtoolTips79592'>FAO<\/span>, 2004; Frison, 2011)<\/strong>\n    <div class=\"block__about__content\">\n<li>Overall biodiversity is defined as the sum of all living organisms at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levels.<\/li>\n<li> Agrobiodiversity is more narrowly defined as the range of species, varieties, and ecosystems &#8211; together with crop wild relatives, pollinators, and other associated organisms &#8211; which are used by humans for food and agriculture. It sustains and stabilizes both agro and natural ecosystems of food production and harvesting. Faced with the challenges of our society and the objectives of sustainable development, the authors call for a transdisciplinary approach with a One Health perspective.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The second article (Donkersley, 2020) shares a <strong>specific example on how species decline or extinction is interconnected to the environmental changes, to human health, and to the food system<\/strong> by presenting the case of <strong>honeybees decline.<\/strong> The authors show that indeed, <strong>honeybee health cannot be separated from the health of the environment that surrounds them,<\/strong> as a single health issue for honeybees can make the entire agricultural and food system vulnerable, because of its dependence on the pollinating and honey-producing activities. Thus, declining honeybee health is potentially threatening food security, which requires a One Health approach.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Still on the theme of biodiversity but from a different angle, the third article (Harris, 2022) reviews how <strong>biodiversity of fruit and vegetables supports dietary diversity<\/strong> for current human populations, and how it can be <strong>preserved and enhanced for future generations<\/strong>. Once more, an integrated and holistic approach is needed considering the potential win-wins and trade-offs for policy and action, building on food systems.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>The articles presented in this edition strongly support the vision that that a transversal and holistic perspective is essential to tackle the challenges of our society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Therefore, the <strong>9th edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egeaconference.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EGEA Conference<\/a><\/strong> (20-22 September 2023) will be dedicated to the theme \" <strong>Diet, fruits &amp; vegetables and One Health: what contributions?\"<\/strong>. Around 1995, he initiated, and has since been coordinating the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) that included over half-a-million participants in 10 European Countries. Recognizing the scientific potential of storing DNA and blood samples from study participants, he established the first dedicated large-scale population biobanks based at the International Agency for Research on Cancer of WHO, in Lyon. This vision has provided an international resource for investigation of the role of diet, nutrition, metabolic, inflammatory and genetic factors in the aetiology of cancer and other chronic diseases. Recently, he has led research showing the deleterious effects of abdominal obesity and insulin resistance in the causation of several cancers and in increasing all-cause mortality in adult
