{"id":100005,"date":"2024-10-24T15:10:01","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T13:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/?post_type=article_revue&#038;p=100005"},"modified":"2024-10-24T15:10:04","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T13:10:04","slug":"infographic-food-insecurity-a-systemic-and-integrated-approach-to-provide-access-to-healthy-food","status":"publish","type":"article_revue","link":"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/en\/global-fv-newsletter-article\/infographic-food-insecurity-a-systemic-and-integrated-approach-to-provide-access-to-healthy-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Infographic &#8211; Food insecurity: a systemic and integrated approach to provide access to healthy food"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Food insecurity involves a complex interaction between inter-related factors: limited access to healthy foods, increased availability of unhealthy foods in the food environment and the influence of traditions and social norms ; physical limitations including the lack of suitable equipment, limited storage space ; the lack of time exacerbated by precarious working conditions and long commutes, financial uncertainty forcing the most precarious households to make less nutritious food choices, and cultural and individual factors including education, nutritional knowledge, physical and mental exhaustion, especially among single-parent families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet these challenges, the literature advocates a systemic and integrated approach, combining several policy measures. Existing initiatives, or those currently being tested, include the following examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditional solidarity schemes: social food bank, fresh produce distribution, community gardens,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food voucher programs: such as SNAP and WIC in the United States,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovative initiatives, such as the Social Food Security, which is currently being tested in Montpellier (France) and aims to ensure fair and universal access to a healthy diet, while promoting local and sustainable consumption,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax reforms, such as the VAT exemption on necessities in Spain,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Educational initiatives, such as culinary workshops and school nutrition programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"3178\" src=\"https:\/\/aprifel-pp.mentalworks.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/APRIFEL-insecurite-alimentaire-V2bis-visuel-seul-VE.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100001\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block__stylized-list\">\n    <div class=\"block__stylized-list__leading\" id=\"block__stylized-list__leading\">\n        <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-pen-to-square\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\n        <strong>References<\/strong>\n    <\/div>\n    <div id=\"block__stylized-list__content\" style=\"display: none;\"><ul>\n<li>Pr\u00e9carit\u00e9 et impact sur les comportements de sant\u00e9 : consommation de fruits et l\u00e9gumes, prise en charge du diab\u00e8te (H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Bihan, 2011)<\/li>\n<li>Perspectives on Barriers to Eating Healthy Among Food Pantry Clients (Jayna et al., 2017)<\/li>\n<li>In\u00e9galit\u00e9s sociales et alimentation : Quels sont les besoins et les attentes en termes d\u2019alimentation des personnes en situation d\u2019ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire et comment les dispositifs d\u2019aide alimentaire peuvent-y r\u00e9pondre au mieux ? Exacerbated by conflicts, economic crises, and climate disasters, food insecurity represents a <strong>major challenge<\/strong> in terms of <strong>social justice<\/strong> and <strong>public health<\/strong>. According to the 2019 FAO's State of Food Insecurity in the World report, <strong>2 billion people did not have regular access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Beyond its socio-economic implications, the <strong>impact <\/strong>of <strong>food insecurity<\/strong> on <strong>health <\/strong>is <strong>significant and well-documented<\/strong>. In particular, it is associated with a poorer-quality diet, contributing to the <strong>development of chronic diseases<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1056\/NEJMp1000072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seligman and Schillinger, 2010<\/a>). Conducted between 2011 and 2012 in food aid centers in France, the ABENA2 study revealed higher rates of nutrition-related health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and certain vitamin deficiencies among the users of these facilities compared to the general population (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santepubliquefrance.fr\/determinants-de-sante\/nutrition-et-activite-physique\/documents\/rapport-synthese\/alimentation-et-etat-nutritionnel-des-beneficiaires-de-l-aide-alimentaire.-etude-abena-2011-2012-et-evolutions-depuis-2004-20052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grange et al., 2013<\/a>).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This month, the Global Fruit and Vegetables Newsletter presents a synthesis of three recent articles examining the <strong>dietary habits of vulnerable population<\/strong>s, including adolescents from socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and beneficiaries of food banks, highlighting the <strong>various barriers to adopting a healthy, balanced diet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The first article (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0031938423000021#:~:text=Highlights%20%E2%80%A2%20Vegetable%20intake%20determinants%20are%20poorly%20investigated%20in%20less\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bel-Serrat et al., 2023<\/a>) explores the <strong>factors influencing vegetable consumption among adolescents living in a socio-economically<\/strong> <strong>deprived <\/strong>areas of Dublin, through the testimonies of teachers and community organizers. A total of <strong>11 barriers<\/strong> were <strong>identified <\/strong>and <strong>mapped<\/strong>, revealing <strong>complex interactions<\/strong>. Based on this analysis, the study highlights that while actions can be taken at the individual level to improve adolescents' food choices, they cannot have a significant impact without adequate approaches at the community and at the public policy levels. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The second article (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0007996024001007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Galtier et al., 2024<\/a>) presents results from the Prevalim study that aimed to examine the <strong>dietary habits of social grocery stores users<\/strong> (n=82 volunteers) and to assess <strong>compliance with the national dietary guidelines<\/strong> (PNNS, France). The study found <strong>similarities <\/strong>with the <strong>general population<\/strong>, such as insufficient intake of fruit and vegetables, nuts and legumes and a high consumption of sweet products, while <strong>some possible specificities<\/strong> were suggested such as <strong>ignorance or \u2018\u2018fear\u2019\u2019 of canned foods<\/strong>, and <strong>low consumption of animal products<\/strong> (meat, fish and eggs as well as dairy products). Interestingly, contrary to the popular belief that poor people don't cook much, most of respondents reported to cook their meals daily. Economic and cultural factors were identified as the main obstacles to meeting the recommendations.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The third article (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0195666323026375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verdeau and Monnery-Patris, 2024<\/a>) explores the <strong>value given to food sustainability<\/strong> by <strong>food insecure individuals<\/strong>, based on 29 semi-structured interviews with users of a social grocery store. The study reveals that participants facing food insecurity accord <strong>high importance to all dimensions of food sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the healthiness and naturalness of foods<\/strong>. On the other hand, the<strong> environmental impact of the food they choose is of less concern<\/strong>. The article also highlights a <strong>significant gap between participants' food values and their actual behaviors<\/strong>, mainly due to <strong>economic restricitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Together, these three articles demonstrate that <strong>food insecurity is shaped by a multitude of individual, social, and environmental factors<\/strong>. Consequently, a <strong>multidimensional approach<\/strong> seems <strong>essential <\/strong>to <strong>promote a transition towards more balanced and sustainable dietary habits<\/strong>.
