Towards local food systems: what do we know concerning facilitators & obstacles?
Infographic : tools to inform about the origin of fruit and vegetables
Geographical origin is one of the most important criteria when purchasing fruit and vegetables. There are several types of legislated information to guide consumers:
- Fruit and vegetable labelling :
European and French regulations require that the name, the country of origin (full name) and the price of the product (per kilo, per piece or per batch) be indicated in characters in the same font size. This information can appear either on a label on the product, or on a nearby sign in a noticeable place, with the information legibly displayed.
- Signs of identification of quality and origin (SIQO)
SIQO are official labels regulated by the French or European authorities, guaranteeing specific characteristics to consumers. The Protected Geographical Indication and the Protected Designation of Origin (formerly AOC in France) provide consumers with a guarantee of a specific origin as defined in their specifications.
In France, there are respectively 32 PGI-certified and 13 PDO-certified fruit and vegetables.
Some private, individual or collective initiatives may also include geographical references, like the ‘fruits et légumes de France’ logo (and its variations), which can only be used for products grown and packaged in France.
